December 17thJust home from the 18th Annual St. Joe’s Tournament in South Bend, Indiana.
|
The “BEARCATS RULE” slogan was the chant of the weekend. Lawrence
started off on Friday night with a victory over a very good St. Joe team that passed the puck better than most. Saturday morning the BEARCATS put a whooping on a tough Marian team
that came out hitting. Saturday evening, the BEARCATS sputtered early because of the aggressive play of St. Edwards but came on strong to capture another victory. This put the
BEARCATS in the Championship game on Sunday against Barrington. Early in this game the officiating caused some trouble for both teams but the BEARCATS were able to take advantage
and came out of the first two periods ahead 4-0. While the zambonie was cutting the ice, Barrington wascutting its new game plan, which put the BEARCATS on their heels by scoring
|
somewhat early in the third period. The BEARCATS were inflicted with a penalty to a key defensemen
at the 9:30 mark. Along with the 2 minute minor, a 10-minute misconduct was added. This forced the enduring defensemen to play even more assertively which was contested by
another 2-minute minor for roughing to which the fine officiating crew attached another 10-minute misconduct. The BEARCATS, down 2 defensemen, began to feel the pressure as
Barrington scored again bringing the score to 4-2. From this point, all sorts of pressure was applied by Barrington but time ran out and the Lawrence Bearcats prevailed. Below
they have been captured in a timeless photo...

September 13thThe team has been working hard to prepare for our exhibition season opener against Napierville this Saturday (9/16). This game and our Sunday
(9/17) contest with the Dayton Bluehawks should provide an early glimpse of the team's potential. We then have two weeks of practice before we head into the regular season with games every weekend.
The players voted for team Captain and Alternate Captains and the coaching staff announced the following appointments at the Team Picnic this past Sunday:
Captain - Bill Steck Alternate Captain - Josh Turner Alternate Captain - Michael Leaming
Congratulations to Bill, Josh and Mike. They will lead by both words and example..
August 30thOur try-outs are complete. We had 29 players at try-outs competing for 17-18 spots. Thanks to all of the players and their parents for coming
and putting forth a great effort. The difference between this year's try-out and two years ago when we had only 14 players is amazing. The
unfortunate side of this growth is that we can't take every one on the Varsity team. Chuck Ruud, the head coach of our Junior Varsity affiliate
team, the Hamilton County Warriors, took the time to attend try-outs and we expect to place 5-6 players with them for future development. Congratulations to the "new" players who made the team: John Emhardt, Josh Hutton, David Kurek, Will Mohr, Kevin Murray, Brett Napier,
Tug Townsend, Eric Tribble, Matt Walsh and Matt Weber. They will join returning players Rick Davenport, Kevin Elkins, Chris Fersch, Pat Finn, Mike Leaming, Ryan McCombs, Bill Steck and Josh Turner.
We head into "Traing Camp" sessions this week where we will focus solely on fundementals. We have specific, technical guest coaches to work on
skating, passing, shooting, checking and goaltending in these sessions and through September to lay a good foundation for the season. We will
need to play to, and maybe beyond, our potential to approach our success of last season.. August 10thOur summer skate program is nearing the end. Our final skate is next Thursday at 6:15 p.m. at the Forum at Fishers. Tara Lane has been very
helpful in providing expert advice on skating form and techniques during her 30 minute clinics at the skates. As in the past the Lawrence
coaching staff will devote time at each practice to skating. It is the foundation upon which all other skills and systems are built. Several of our
returning players have been working hard in the off season and have improved their skating noticeably. Try-outs are scheduled for Tuesday August 22 (7:30 - 9:00 p.m.) and Thursday August 24 (6:15 - 7:45 p.m.) at the Forum.
Please plan to arrive at least 45 minutes before the Tuesday session to register and pay the try-out fee of $25. You also must bring a copy of
your report card from last semester to establish academic eligibility. Please bring both a white and black jersey to each session since we will have a
scrimmage component each session. Check the "Eligibility" page on this site if you have a question about who is eligible to play for the Lawrence
Bearcats. We expect representatives of our JV affiliate team, the Hamilton County Warriors to be at try-outs to evaluate players for their roster
also. We are looking forward to an exciting and competitive season. If you have questions about try-outs or Lawrence Hockey in general call one
of the persons listed on the "Team Officials" page of this site. July 25
Congratulations to the following players who are getting ready for try-outs and the upcoming season by training this summer at Acceleration Indiana:
- Rick Davenport
- John Emhardt
- Drew Facsko
- Chris Fersch
- Mike Leaming
- Ryan McCombs
- Bill Steck
- Josh Turner
- Matt Walsh
Working on the skating treadmill and plyometrics will help them improve their skating stride, stamina, speed and quickness.
Our July 19th summer skate was attended by 17 players. Tara Lane conducted a 30 minute skating clinic focusing on transitional turns. Some
passing and 2 on 1's was followed by a lively 4 on 4 scrimmage. As we move closer to try-outs, the summer skates will become more beneficial
for those players who are committed to skating their best at try-outs in order to make the team. We are very pleased to have approximately 15
new players interested in Lawrence Bearcat Hockey. With openings on the Varsity and Junior Varsity (Hamilton County Warriors) we hope to be
able to provide a high level, quality high school hockey experience. Our next summer skate is Wednesday, July 26th at 6:15 p.m. at the Forum at Fishers. July 7, 2000Our 1st summer skate went well. We had 20 players (18 skaters and 2 goalies). Included in this were 12 new prospects. Chuck Ruud, the coach of
our JV affiliate team, the Hamilton County Warriors was present to watch the skate and plans on attending most of them. Several players called
and said they could not attend this skate but will be at future skates. Tara Lane conducted a 30 minutes skating session which she will do every
skate. We expect to have 20 to 25 players at each skate and will always have at least 30 minutes of scrimmage. Josh Hutton, a former Racer
Bantam A & AA goalie has been assigned to Lawrence since Ben Davis is going to be a JV team this year. We are registered to play in a
Thanksgiving tournament in Columbus Ohio against some top flight teams from Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Maryland. There are currently 11 players enrolled in Acceleration (honestly, I was hoping for more).
